Demonstration Project Using a Battery Energy Storage System to Stabilize Distribution Networks Begins in Spain

-Transportable Battery System Installed at an Electrical Substation-

As part of a NEDO project, Toshiba Corporation has begun a project in collaboration with Gas Natural SDG, S.A. (Gas Natural Fenosa), a major Spanish utility company, to demonstrate distribution network stabilization in response to fluctuations in power demand through the use of a battery energy storage system. The project is taking place in the Community of Madrid in Spain.

Under this demonstration project, a transportable battery system (power output: 500kW, storage capacity: 776kWh), which utilizes Toshiba’s SCiBTM lithium-ion rechargeable battery technology, has been installed at an electric substation in Alcalá de Henares. The battery system smooths fluctuations in power demand to be supplied by the electrical substation by charging or discharging energy. This project will evaluate the effectiveness of the battery system for the stable operation of distribution networks.
