Demonstration of Optimized Energy Management at a Hospital in India

-Reducing Energy Consumption by 30% Using ICT-

NEDO, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India (MOHFW), and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) reached agreement to jointly carry out a project for reducing energy consumption at a hospital and effectively using medical data based on information and communications technology (ICT). A memorandum of understanding for the project was concluded among NEDO, MOHFW, and AIIMS on November 30, 2016.

In the project, utility facilities, including a photovoltaic power generation system, and ICT will be introduced, and a system network will be established at AIIMS, India's national hospital combined with a higher education institution for medicine. The project aims to reduce AIIMS' power consumption by 30% by using an energy management system to optimize energy use.

1.Overview

NEDO, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India (MOHFW), and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) reached agreement to jointly carry out a project in India for integrating energy management with medical information technology (IT), aiming to reduce energy consumption at a hospital and effectively use medical data based on information and communications technology (ICT). A memorandum of understanding for the project was concluded among NEDO, MOHFW, and AIIMS on November 30, 2016.

In the project, utility facilities, including a photovoltaic power generation system, and ICT will be introduced, and a system network will then be established at AIIMS, India's national hospital combined with a higher education institution for medicine.

More specifically, a photovoltaic power generation system will help reduce the use of commercially produced electricity. Utility devices, such as air conditioners and lighting equipment, will be replaced with high efficiency devices. Subsequently, an energy management system will optimize energy use, and an energy saving ICT platform* will be established. In addition, medical image data will be electronically managed, thereby improving hospital operation and the efficiency of medical care. Thus, optimized energy management for a hospital in India where a supply of electricity is insufficient will be verified from the perspectives of environment, cost, and reliability. The project aims to reduce AIIMS’ power consumption by 30% from its 2014 level.

In the future, it will be possible to develop optimal operation plans for utility facilities by forecasting energy demand based on facility and weather conditions, which will also save energy. Moreover, various types of medical data will be integrated by using high-efficiency IT solutions with the aim of further improving the efficiency of medical services and curbing increased energy use at AIIMS.

* ICT platform
An ICT platform is IT infrastructure that combines energy-saving and IT devices. In addition to controlling energy use, it can manage and process medical data in a comprehensive way, thereby optimizing energy management and improving the efficiency of medical care and hospital operation.
