Going forward, support will be provided for joint international research and development projects between Japanese and German companies with the aim of promoting open innovation, thereby accelerating the efforts of the two countries to further enhance their industrial competitiveness.

1. Overview

Germany is one of the world's largest economies. As a long-established industrialized nation that has a strong industrial infrastructure, Germany is a leader in a number of technological areas. For example, it introduced the concepts of Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things in recent years. Japan therefore considers Germany to be an important partner country in terms of promoting research, development and industrial policies.

On March 19, NEDO, the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI), and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy of the Federal Republic of Germany (BMWi) signed a joint statement of intent on bilateral cooperation in research, development and innovation in order to strengthen the industrial competitiveness and facilitate the internationalization of Japan and Germany.

The signing was carried out at the venue of the Global Event for Digital Business (CeBIT 2017) in Hannover, Germany by Chairman Kazuo Furukawa of NEDO, Minister Hiroshige Seko of METI, and Minister Brigitte Zypries of BMWi.

In the joint statement, NEDO, METI and BMWi agreed to provide financial support for joint research and development projects between Japan and Germany based on the recognition that such projects will play an important role in strengthening the industrial competitiveness and facilitate the internationalization of the two countries.

Accordingly, NEDO, METI and BMWi will provide support for joint international research and development projects between Japanese and German companies with the aim of promoting open innovation, thereby accelerating the efforts of Japan and Germany to enhance their industrial competitiveness.

2. Future plans

NEDO will include Germany in the list of nations for its co-funding program to support joint international research and development activities between companies in Japan and overseas. In order to develop and carry out projects as part of the program, a public solicitation was announced on NEDO's website on March 21.
