NEDO to Start a Full-scale Demonstration Project on the World's First Global Hydrogen Supply Chain

– Transporting hydrogen by ship from Brunei in 2020 for domestic use in Japan –

NEDO, Chiyoda Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsui & Co. Ltd., and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha will partner with the Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace (Negara Brunei Darussalam) in order to start a full-scale demonstration project of the world's first global hydrogen supply chain.

Both the Hydrogenation Plant in Negara Brunei Darussalam and the Dehydrogenation Plant in the Kawasaki waterfront district will be completed by 2019. Beginning in 2020, a demonstration is scheduled to be conducted to transport liquid hydrogen procured in Brunei, at room temperature and under normal pressure, to change it back into gas hydrogen and supply it to users in Japan..

In addition, the four companies, including Chiyoda Corporation, Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsui & Co. Ltd., and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, has founded the Advanced Hydrogen Energy Chain Association for Technology Development (AHEAD), in order to engage in major work on this demonstration project.
