NEDO and Solar Frontier K.K. have succeeded in fabricating a 1cm2-sized thin-film CIS solar cell with the world's highest conversion efficiency of 22.9%. This achievement was made by improving the CIS light-absorbing layer and a surface treatment. The new efficiency record outperforms the former 1cm2-cell record of 21.7% held by the same company by 1.2 percentage points. It is a significant advancement toward achieving NEDO's power-generation cost target of 14 yen/kWh by 2020 and 7 yen/kWh by 2030.
