NEDO Project Partners Develop Highly Durable and Active NOx Purification Catalyst for Automobiles

– Expects a dramatic improvement in automobile fuel consumption –

As part of a NEDO project, the Japan Fine Ceramics Center, the University of Tokyo, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), the Industrial Technology Center of Tochigi Prefecture, Mitsubishi Chemical Corp., and Ashizawa Finetech, Ltd. have jointly developed a NOx purification catalyst for automobiles, which is highly durable and highly active in a wide range of temperature zones, including both low and high temperatures. It was developed through combinations of technologies, such as the newly developed ultra-fast synthesis method for zeolite, as well as the fine particle formation method for powders.

This catalyst is highly active in low temperatures and remains highly active and durable even after undergoing the high temperature durability test. This catalyst is therefore suitable for use in temperature zones in which conventional catalyst usage was not possible; as a result, a dramatic improvement in automobile fuel consumption is expected. By utilizing the results of this research as a new fundamental technology, it will be possible for various zeolite-type catalysts, including NOx, to achieve higher performances.
