NEDO Energy Conservation Model Project with the Government of India

May 26, 2009

The Government of India and NEDO reached agreement on the implementation of the Model Project for Sinter Cooler Waste Heat Recovery at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL/VIZAG) in Andhra Pradesh, India.
The MOU signing took place on May 25, 2009 in New Delhi.
This model project, which will demonstrate energy conservation technology by operating sinter cooler waste heat recovery equipment at the steel plant in Visakhapatnam, will be carried out for three years until FY2011. An annual reduction of approximately 117,000 tons of CO2 is expected.

Note: The project equipment recovers waste heat exhausted while iron ore is cooled during treatment in the sintering process.
Treated iron ore is then fed into a blast furnace.
