Celebrating the Completion of a Demonstration Plant for Producing Ethanol Ingredients from Strained Sugarcane Lees in Thailand

July 10, 2018

With the cooperation of the National Innovation Agency (NIA) of Thailand's Ministry of Science and Technology, NEDO has commissioned Toray Industries, Inc., Mitsui Sugar Co., Ltd., and Mitsui & Co., Ltd, to develop an energy-saving production system that produces high-value-added products, such as polyphenols and oligosaccharides, as well as cellulosic sugars, which can be converted into bioethanol, from the strained lees of sugarcane (bagasse) in Udon Thani Province, Thailand. On July 6, an on-site ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of a demonstration plant for this project.

At the completion ceremony, the Japanese side was represented by stakeholders such as Mr. Kiyoshi Imai, NEDO Executive Director; Mr. Noboru Sekiguchi, Minister of Japanese Embassy in Thailand; and representatives from the contractor companies listed above. The Thai side was represented by stakeholders such as Mr. Wattana Puttichart, Governor of Udon Thani; representatives from the NIA and other Thai government agencies; and local involved parties from Udon Thani Province.

In his speech, NEDO Executive Director Mr. Kiyoshi Imai expressed his hope that producing ingredients for the manufacture of chemicals from bagasse could create a synergy between the agriculture and chemical industries, thereby contributing to the further development of Thailand. The demonstration plant will be put into operation to test its energy-saving performance and the effectiveness of its simultaneous production of multiple high-value-added products.
