Second International Symposium on the Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials

October 5, 2011

NEDO organized the Second International Symposium on the Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials in Tokyo from September 29 to 30.
This symposium aimed to release to the public the results of NEDO project "Research and Development of Nanoparticle Characterization Methods - Evaluating Risks associated with Manufactured Nanomaterials" implemented from 2007 to 2011.
The plenary session held on the first day of the symposium was started off with the introduction of the project lead by Dr. Junko Nakanishi, followed by the lectures offered by the project participants as well as the invited foreign experts from Europe and the U.S. regarding the world risk assessment/management trend and risk governance in the field of manufactured nanomaterials. About 400 visitors to the symposium participated in active question -and- answer sessions after each lecture.
The second day of the symposium, packed with visitors, held 5 breakout sessions in 3 venues in which foreign experts offered more technical lectures. Notably, during the wrap-up session in the breakout session for carbon nanotube (CNT), vigorous discussion was held regarding a number of subjects including the one based on the questions by the visitors.
Videotaped contents of this symposium will be available soon at NEDO website.
