Smart Community Demonstration Project Begins Operations in the German City of Speyer

On May 30, 2016, NEDO held an operation commencement ceremony to celebrate the start of demonstration operations of an integrated system that combines solar panels, storage batteries, heat pumps, and HEMS (Home Energy Management System) as part of the Smart Community Demonstration Project in Germany, which has been implemented by NEDO in collaboration with NTT DOCOMO, Inc., NTT FACILITIES, Inc., Hitachi Chemical Company, Ltd. and Hitachi Information & Telecommunication Engineering, Ltd.

NEDO Executive Director Makoto Watanabe participated in the ceremony and remarked, “The city of Speyer has the second cathedral in Germany inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and is also famous as an environmental city. We expect the outcome of this demonstration project to be disseminated not only in Germany but around the world.”

The ceremony was attended by NEDO Executive Director Makoto Watanabe, Embassy of Japan in Germany Ambassador Takeshi Yagi, Speyer City Mayor Hansjörg Eger, and Stadtwerke Speyer GmbH (SWS) Managing Director Wolfgang Bühring in addition to other officials and residents participating in the project.
