NEDO Launches a Project to Demonstrate a Next-Generation Public Transport System in the Philippines

NEDO, together with the Philippines' Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the country's Intramuros Administration (IA), has launched a project to demonstrate a next-generation public transport system that uses a combination of electric tricycles (e-tricycles) and an electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem.

This demonstration project was commissioned by NEDO and is being conducted by SoftBank Corp. in Manila to determine the feasibility of a public transport system that meets the needs of the local area through efforts such as management of vehicle capacity, management of EV charging, and punctual operation of scheduled services that takes into account traffic conditions. The aim of the project is to introduce and promote a next-generation public transport system in the country and to reduce energy consumption by 85%.

The operation commencement ceremony was held on October 20 in Intramuros. Munehiko Tsuchiya, Executive Director of NEDO; Ma Corazon Halili Dichosa, Executive Director of DTI; Merceditas C. de Sahagun, Chief. Finance and Administrative Division of IA; Junichiro Suzuki, Trade and Commerce Attaché of the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines; and Amane Kito, Senior Vice President of SoftBank Corp. were in attendance.
