November 24, 2016

NEDO concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Laboratory for Energy and Geology (LNEG) of Portugal for a smart community demonstration project on November 21, 2016. NEDO also concluded an Implementing agreement (IA) with the city of Lisbon who will provide the City Hall and other offices for the demonstration project. The MOU was signed by Mr. Makoto Watanabe, NEDO's Executive Director, and Dr. Teresa Ponce de Leão, President of LNEG, in the presence of Mr. Hiroshi Azuma, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Portugal, and H.E. Mr. Jorge Seguro Sanches, Portuguese Secretary of State for Energy.

In the demonstration project, building-scale multiple air-conditioner systems with a cold air storage function will be installed in public buildings including Lisbon City Hall and an automated demand response system is demonstrated to control those air-conditioning systems capable of adjusting output based on power supply and demand. Business model for electric power retailers utilizing such systems will also be evaluated.
