NEDO Chairman Furukawa Participated in "Private Viewing of the Smart Community Technology Development Project Utilizing Hydrogen Cogeneration System," as well as the "Symposium for the Future of Local Energy in Kobe"

December 11, 2017

On December 10, 2017, NEDO Chairman Kazuo Furukawa participated in the event "Private Viewing of the NEDO Smart Community Technology Development Project Utilizing Hydrogen Cogeneration Systems,*" held at the demonstration plant in the former Kobe Minatojima Clean Center.

The demonstration test will be initiated in late January 2018. At the viewing, Obayashi Corporation and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., the project contractors, introduced the demonstration plant to the guests. Among the attendees was the guest of honor, Satoshi Kusakabe, Commissioner of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The guests, together with Kizo Hisamoto, the Mayor of Kobe, which served as the associate city for the project, also visited the exhibition facility for the demonstration projects, the Strategic Roadmap for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells and the Hydrogen Smart City Kobe Initiative.

NEDO Chairman Furukawa greeted attendees by saying that NEDO expected positive results from this demonstration test for heat and power supply systems that utilize hydrogen cogeneration systems in inner-city areas. The demonstration test was the first of its kind in the world.

Commissioner Kusakabe of the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy at the METI and NEDO Chairman Furukawa participated in the "Symposium for the Future of Local Energy in Kobe," hosted by Kobe City in the afternoon of that same day. At the symposium, experts gave lectures, including Masayoshi Yamakage, Director of Advanced Energy Systems and Structure Division of Agency for Natural Resources and Energy at the METI. Additionally, a panel discussion was held discussing effective utilization of local energy.

  • *Cogeneration Systems (CGS): Also known as combined heat and power (CHP) systems, which are
designed to generate heat and electrical power simultaneously from a single fuel source, and to make
heat and power supply systems more energy-efficient. A 1 MW hydrogen-fueled gas turbine power
generation facility was installed at this demonstration plant.
