1) Feasibility study on a total system of CCS-EOR (CCUS)
Matching CO2 sources and reservoirs is one of the key issues for accomplishing a successful CCS-EOR project. Many factors should be considered in the matching including especially geographical features and the balance between the quantities and composition of CO2 emitted and whether, or to what degree, these satisfy the requirements of the fields where it will be used. In this study, the actual volumes and composition of CO2 sources and the requirements for EOR in specific oil fields in China are based on data supplied by CNPC, and optimization of the total system of CCS-EOR is studied.
2) Development of technologies on reservoir characterization
In the demonstration test project for CO2 injection conducted at Nagaoka, ten thousand tons of CO2 were injected and several monitoring techniques were applied during and after injection, including seismic surveys, cross-well seismic tomography and geophysical logging. As well as the field monitoring, the simultaneous measurement of seismic waves through samples of bedrock and the specific resistance of those samples was conducted in the laboratory of RITE to acquire data for the analyzing of seismic topography test results in the field. The applicability of those monitoring techniques will be studied at an oil field in China focusing on the evaluation of currently applied technology used for reservoir monitoring, together with the laboratory testing of the physical properties of bedrock.
3) Research and study for development of microbial restoration of methane deposit in subsurface technology
The most expected method of CCUS is CCS-EOR. In addition, microbial regeneration of methane in subsurface using sequestered CO2 may give incentive to CCS-EOR process. Mainly, there were two purposes of this project theme, construction of research study plans and arrangement of research environments, in this year. Practical contents are follows, (a) investigation of microbial communities inhabiting formation water, (b) Isolation of methane-producing thermophilic archaea and hydrogen-producing thermophilic bacteria from formation water, (c) estimation of hydrogen and methane production potential of microbial communities inhabiting reservoir water of oil-fields at China, and (d) economical evaluation of technology that microbial restoration of methane deposit in subsurface oil-fields.
