�p���v��We, as a mobile 2D symbol standardization committee established under the auspices of New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), succeeded in developing new methods to evaluate the quality of two-dimensional symbols displayed on a mobile phone and to verify the readability of 2D symbols printed on a paper media when read by a mobile phone camera. We explored appropriate methods for the assessment of brightness and contrast of the symbols displayed on a mobile screen by referring to the quality evaluation method used for the symbols printed on a paper media. As the initial step, a difference between a QR Code (2D symbol) shown on a mobile screen and that printed on a paper media was defined by taking their microphotographs, and the appropriate evaluation method was studied on the assumption that the existence of LCD wiring area (area that never emits light) and the color display technique (outline and position of sub pixel) would be the factors that possibly affect the display quality. Then, a verification device was established in accordance with this evaluation specification. Using the information obtained here, we examined the items required for the development of guideline for 2D symbols displayed on a mobile device. Our test confirmed that ISO/IEC 15423 "Bar code scanner and decoder performance testing" is applicable to examine the readability of QR Codes. We also conducted an additional test to see if a QR Code test chart can be read with a camera built in the mobile phone in order to identify features that are unique to mobile phones. Based on this result, items that should be included in the guideline were studied for the generation of 2D symbols read by a mobile phone camera. In the meantime, a New Proposal "Information technology - Automatic identification and data capture techniques - Reading and display of ORM by mobile devices" proposed by Japan in June 2010 has been approved as a global standard with a majority of votes by the ISO member counties. Our next objective is to fully discuss this matter during the SC31 WG6 international meeting in April 2011 and establish a working draft that well reflects the achievements of this project.
