�p���v��The following results were obtained in the study of the fiscal year in 2010.
1. DLC samples and the evaluation of their structure, composition, and characterization
The project obtained 10 DLC samples from domestic organizations and 5 samples from overseas organizations. The ratio of sp3/sp2 and hydrogen content are analyzed by NEXAFS and ERDA/RBS methods. The compositional analysis and optical characterization are performed by UV and VIS Raman scattering spectroscopy, ellipsometry, X-ray reflectivity, GD-OES and infrared spectroscopy. These results were transferred to classification WG.
2. Evaluation of mechanical properties
The hardness and friction coefficient of DLC samples, including samples from overseas, were evaluated. In order to evaluate the hardness of the samples, the indentation test method commonly used for DLC was applied. This year�fs new samples were found to have a wide range of hardness from 7 to 50 GPa. Thus, these measurements were useful for the classification of DLC.The testing of DLC friction and wear characteristics were based on the JIS draft which we made, and it was found that this draft of JIS/ISO standards was useful.
3. Advancement of classification of DLC films
Advanced classification has been performed by investigating both sp3 ratio and hydrogen contents of 43 kinds of DLC films which were fabricated in 2006, 2009 and 2010.Moreover, we discussed the relationship between this classification and another classification idea which is constructed as a function of a refractive index: n and an extinction coefficient: k. This idea enables us to classify DLC films easily.
4. Concept of simple evaluation methods for DLC
The concept of simple evaluation methods of DLC was considered using optical and mechanical testing methods for use in industry and research. We then considered these parameters for industrial situations, and found how to apply these parameters to industrial applications.
5. Trend survey on the standardization of DLC, information exchange etc.
The presentation on the activity in Japan, the trend survey on the standardization of DLC and the information exchange were carried out in the 3rd workshop on the DLC standardization that was a session of PSE 2010 held September 2010 in Germany. The 4th workshop was held November 2010 at Tokyo Institute of Technology to present and discuss the activities and researches on the standardization of DLC. In addition, the short course was organized for domestic participants to give presentations on the fundamental methodologies for the classification of DLC. A questionnaire survey was carried out to coordinate and collect the views on DLC standardization and to spread the information on the activities of the project among the public. It was confirmed that the current approaches were strongly supported by the answers that were in good agreement with the policy of the project. A preliminary presentation on the activity in Japan was made for the proposal toward ISO at the ISO/TC107 meeting that was held February 2011. At the same time, the consultation with The Surface Finishing Society of Japan that is the domestic deliberative body of ISO/TC107 was positively advanced and the crystallization of the process for DLC standardization was developed.
6. Preparation of the Draft for JIS
The draft of the determination of friction and wear characteristics of DLC for JIS and ISO was prepared with the consensus of opinions from the participating companies and research institute. Furthermore, the draft of the testing procedure for the DLC classification was also prepared.
