�p���v��Recently, the needs to collect biometric information have been increasing�Awhere the realization of a light-weight and small-sized monitoring device should be one of the crucial issues. Through the project, we have developed a multipurpose communication device for vital sign monitoring jointly with the National Center for Child Health and Development. The prototype of the vital sign monitoring transducer was developed, where the lightweight earphones are equipped with the device. The developed device possesses biomedical signal processing capabilities, and the processed signals and voice as well are transmitted though the device. In this paper, we report the device prototyping and its evaluation results towards the practical use of the device. The paper consists of the following six parts. (1)"Implementation of vital sign monitoring transducer": The technical study was made to implement the transducer, which contains radio transmission capabilities both for vital sign and voice signals at the same time. Through the experiments, we have confirmed that the transmission was successfully performed. (2)"Study on vital sign signal acquisition by using the developed transducer": The vital sigh acquisition test was executed to obtain basic characteristics of the device, such as the device performance, environmental tolerance, attachment feel of the device, etc. For testing under the severe environmental conditions, the animal experiment was performed. (3)"Study on radio transmission of vital sign signals": The technical study was made to realize the radio transmission of vital sign signals, which includes technologies on analog signal processing, modulation/demodulation, multiplexing, short distance radio, etc.(4)"Experiment to acquire basic characteristics on radio transmission": A various kind of basic radio transmission characteristics have been obtained through the experiments, which include confidential intervals of received signals, transmission distance and other radio channel related items. (5)"Study on downsizing of vital sign monitoring device": The practical investigation was made to perform downsizing of the monitoring device. It can be achieved by adopting the modular functional structure. (6) "Evaluation on the practical use of the developed vital sign monitoring device":�@We have evaluated the developed device through the actual monitoring of vital signals such as the cardiac rate. We have confirmed that the 10m radio transmission distance was achieved by using the outside antenna architecture. As for the voice signal transmission, the function works well under the co-existence with vital signal transmission. The quality of transmitted data was confirmed through the violation of CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) code.
