本事業では、我が国の輸送用液体バイオ燃料の導入形態を踏まえ、具体的な持続可能性基準を評価するため、導入が想定される輸送用液体バイオ燃料の温室効果ガス排出量を評価した。具体的には、(1)短期的なバイオ燃料導入形態に係るGHG排出量デフォルト値の算定、(2)中長期的なバイオ燃料導入形態に係るGHG排出量デフォルト値の算定を実施するとともに、GBEP等の国際会議に参加し情報収集を行った。
英文要約Title: Development of Innovative and Comprehensive Production System for Cellulosic Bioethanol, Research on Quantitative Analysis of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction, Research on Sustainability of Biofuels (FY2009-FY2010)
The purpose of this study is to evaluate lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from biofuels for vehicles. Since the new act on the Promotion of the Use of Nonfossil Energy Sources and Effective Use of Fossil Energy Source Materials by Energy Suppliers was adopted in July 2009, sustainability criteria are needed to be set taking into account of actual situation of biofuels’ usage.
(1) Evaluation of lifecycle GHG emissions from biofuels expected to be introduced in the near term
We conducted evaluation of lifecycle GHG emissions from bioethanol and biodiesel which are expected to be introduced in the near term. Bioethanol includes ones made from Brazilian sugarcane, domestic rice, domestic wheat, domestic construction waste material and domestic molasses. Biodiesel, on the other hand, includes ones from South-East Asian palm, American soy, domestic oilseed and domestic waste edible oil.
Using data from statistics, existing domestic plants, policy literature in EU and US and academic papers, we evaluated emissions from direct land use change, material cultivation, material transportation, fuel production and fuel transportation.
(2) Participation in international meetings
In this study, AIST conducted investigation of worldwide discussion of sustainability of biofuels especially that of Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP). GBEP is covering wide criteria and trying to make the scientifically organized ones. The concept is quite adoptable for the domestic discussion in Japan. An AIST researcher has been dispatched to the following meetings and joined the discussions:
(a)Workshop on Sustainability Indicators; 19th-21st Oct. 2009, INTA, Buenos Aires, Argentine
(b)The 6th meeting of the GBEP Task Force on Sustainability; 16th-17th Nov., FAO, Jakarta, Indonesia
(c)The 7th Meeting of the GBEP Task Force on Sustainability & Greenhouse Gas (GHG); 16th-19th Mar., Hague, the Netherlands
Regarding quantitative assessment of GHG emission by lifecycle of the biofuels, procedures of the assessment have been proposed and actually tested. The AIST researcher has also tried the proposed procedure and confirmed the significance.
AIST also investigated information on present status and policies of biofuels in Asian region. This information is expected to be background of analysis for future biofuels’ trade and to give idea for development of default value of the lifecycle GHG emission of biofuels produced in the region.
(3) Evaluation of lifecycle GHG emissions of biofuels expected to be introduced in the medium to long term
In FY2010, we will evaluate lifecycle GHG emissions of biofuels expected to be introduced in the medium to long term. We conducted some preparatory date collection from ERIA and national inventories.
