In view of the aging population, labor shortages and related issues that Japan faces, there are growing expectations that demand will continue to grow for robots working in the actual environment, including in the human coexistence environment. However, there are limits to the applications and use of current robot technologies, and robots able to be widely used in a real environment are not yet commercially available.This is due to the inadequacy of robots’ environmental cognition technologies, situational evaluation technologies and other intelligence technologies. So developing support software technologies according to each environment and situation causes costs to increase and creates conditions that are difficult to respond to.
In order to reduce development costs, thorough promotion of software modularization is necessary so that developers can use it jointly. Accordingly, much is expected of the next-generation robot intelligence technology development project (Intelligent RT Software Project), which aims to develop the necessary intelligence technology and software modularization technology for robots to function reliably and independently in keeping with diverse environments and circumstances.Regarding all the research and development topics of the executing this project, for the sake of smooth and efficient operation, management and configuration of the robot intelligence software platform, as well as the deliberation of the basic specifications, etc., committees will be formed with the participation of project leaders, research body representatives, METI, NEDO, academic experts, etc., and smooth project administration and coordination carried out.
Some of the major results achieved thus far by various committees are summarized below.
1) Matters pertaining to the Standardization Committee:With regard to this project, basic policies for standardization were deliberated over and standardization activity guidelines drafted. Also, with regard to international standardization, trends in RT middleware development were monitored and surveys conducted of overseas (Europe, etc.) standardization trends.
2) Matters pertaining to the Project Promotion Committee (the main committee):Communication, reporting, and exchanges of opinions were carried out concerning matters necessary for the smooth and efficient operation and management of this project, with committees and working groups formed to facilitate the realization of sound research and development results; the status of project progress and development was ascertained, deliberated over and coordinated.
