英文要約The objective of this technical development project is to develop a unused biomass fuel production system using a biomass hot press (BHP) forming technique developed by the Kyoto Institute of Technology. Particularly the project focuses on developing mass production techniques and conducting experiments on the performance of products. In the project, we aim to open the way for a practical plant technically based on findings from experiments and draw up a business plan. Our research and development efforts in fiscal 2009 led to the following achievements:1) We successfully produced formed fuel products from a variety of plant biomass. We succeeded in producing formed fuel products from rotting wood, bamboo, bean jam sludge, used tea leaves, and used coffee bean, grounds by BHP forming and accomplishing performance goals for formed products. This suggests that it is possible to use urban biomass so far treated as waste and a wider range of biomass can be used as fuel materials, leading to cost reduction. 2) The target calorific value was attained in a calorific value test on fuels produced from a variety of plant biomass. The result of a calorific value test shows that the calorific value of the fuel products is between 4,400-5,700 cal/g and the fuel products are easy to ignite and keep burning for a long time. Since their calorific value per unit volume is two thirds of that of coal and more thantwice that ofwood pellets, it can be said that they are high-performance carbon neutral fuels. 3) Experiment on the water resistance and weather resistance of the formed product In an experiment, the formed product was boiled 30 minutes and left outdoors more than one month. From the experiment, it has been found that it provides sufficient water resistance and weather resistance. Since it features high density, it contributes to reduction in transportation and storage costs and resists rainfalls. 4)We successfully pulverized the biomass fuel product into powder of 100 μm or less. This shows that this product can be used for pulverized coal-fired boilers in thermal power plants. 5) In a continuous forming demonstration test, a forming process was successfully carried out three times in a row. In a test with continuous forming demonstration test equipment in which a forming process was carried out three times in a row, we could obtain a formed fuel product which provides a density of 1.35 or more, paving the way to commercial use of the continuous forming process. 6) Compilation of the basic specification and basic configuration plan for a continuous forming mass production prototype plant.
