1 “Contents and Results of Research Development” 1-1 “Research Development of the Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage System (SMES)” (4) “Development of highly reliable/highly durable SMES coil component technology” In response to the degradation of coil conductivity resulting from the cooling test, discovered by FY2010, an optimal design method and winding technology for SMES coils that fit the wire strength was studied. As a result, an insulation coating method and molding method that do not cause conductivity deterioration by the cooling cycle have been discovered, and a hoop stress test in liquid helium was conducted on a model coil manufactured using the said methods in an 8T magnetic field. As a result of the hoop stress test, no deterioration of the coil characteristics was observed even after applying a current of 1,500 A, which is the upper limit of the power supply, and the stress applied to the superconducting wire substrate reached 1.7 GPa. In carrying out the present research and development,the “SMES test method study subcommittee" was organized to carry out sufficient discussion on the test methods.
