サーバシステムの省エネルギー性は、単純に定常的な消費電力量だけでは測ることができず、電力を供給することによって可能となるサーバの性能やサービスの質を加味する必要がある。性能を加味した指標を開発するため、サーバシステムのコンポーネント毎の消費電力が把握可能か調査を行うとともに、省エネルギー性を評価できる指標の枠組みを検討している。

(1) Development of measurement tools for evaluating energy efficiency of server system (University of Tsukuba)
We developed a workload generator that can change workload continuously with simple script, and measured power consumption of AIST environment with this workload generator. We also developed a framework for evaluating energy efficiency of server system. It executes continuously several benchmarks and measures power consumption of the target server system automatically. We selected two types of benchmark, one is for evaluating each component such as CPU, memory, disk, etc., and the other is for evaluating total power efficiency of a server.
(2) Development of new metrics/framework for evaluating energy efficiency in a data center (AIST).
We broke down the power consumption in data center into facilities (power supply and cooling unit) and IT equipment (server, storage and network switch). Furthermore we extracted the ratio of the power consumption of fans and PSU from the total power consumption of server. The reduction efforts provided by project developers were treated as a factor to each component and total energy saving was obtained by summing up them. We obtained over 30% of reduction as the preliminary estimation.
(3) Development of a datacenter reference model(NTT communications)
A draft datacenter reference model is developed which is used as a standard datacenter model for measuring energy efficiency metrics. We developed the draft model by choosing dominant parameters characterizing existing datacenters from the results of investigations done so far. We also added some parameters found during our measurement and analysis of power consumption of a small datacenter model.
(4) Measurement of power consumption in a typical data center (AIST and NTT communications)
We constructed measurement environment which emulates typically available data center in 2007.
100 of 1U servers and 2 blade systems were prepared in 6 racks. Power consumption of each server and temperature around racks were recorded while some work load run on servers. By these experiments, power consumption model of server and data center were obtained.
