サーバシステムの省エネルギー性は、単純に定常的な消費電力量だけでは測ることができず、電力を供給することによって可能となるサーバの性能やサービスの質を加味する必要がある。性能を加味した指標を開発するため、サーバシステムのコンポーネント毎の消費電力が把握可能か調査を行うとともに、省エネルギー性を評価できる指標の枠組みを検討している。

(1) Development of new metrics for evaluating energy efficiency of server system (University of Tsukuba)
In order to understand the power-performance characteristics, we propose a model for evaluating power and performance by using performance counters of CPU and statistics of Disk access and network usage. We have developed a measurement environment to take these information easily and analyzed the relationship between these information and power-performance in several benchmark programs. In addition, we have evaluated the effect of virtual machine technology for some data center services such as web severs, and found it effective to reduce the power consumption of severs.
(2) Development of new metrics for evaluating energy efficiency in a data center (AIST).
We have measured power consumption of several IT equipments, such as 1U server, Blade server, Network switch, and Storage, on the experiment environment that we constructed last year. We have obtained preliminary model of IT equipments. Furthermore, we have done survey related to IT equipment and applications in datacenter. We have described a typical datacenter in Japan and determined a framework to evaluate the total energy-saving quantity by combining all of PJ.
(3) Investigation of existing metrics for evaluating energy efficiency (NTT communications)
The investigation of existing metrics for evaluating energy efficiency in a data center shows that the total power consumption of IT equipments is often included in the commonly used metrics. However, we propose the power consumption of servers, storage, and network equipments should be considered separately, because these equipments show different power consumption characteristics when the workload given to them varies. We have also investigated a number of data centers in Japan, and concluded that redundancy of power and cooling systems, outside air temperature, and nature energy usage should be considered as environmental factors which may affect the energy consumption.
(4) Preliminary investigation for evaluation experiments (IDC Frontier)
We collected the information about the other projects, we found it was not so difficult to evaluate because their development results were expected to be the ordinary size. We need to consider what the main contribution for electricity reducing at data center in the future is. Because some of development results (Cloud computing and Storage) might be influenced by assumed business application, we should evaluate electricity reduction under a business application.
