1. Contents and Results
(1) Development of a turbine
Preliminary design of a turbine has been carried out and numerical investigations have been carried out in order to estimate the performance of the turbine for the ocean current velocity conditions. Based on the calculated pressure distributions, load on the turbine have been investigated.
(2) Development of a floating structure and mooring system
We investigated the characteristics of the floating structure suitable for the ocean current generator. Mooring line, anchor/sinker and cable for electric transmission have been also investigated.
(3) Development of a generator and power transmission system
A direct-drive permanent magnetic generator has been investigated suitable for the ocean current generator by using electromagnetic analysis. A configuration of power transmission system for ocean current generator has been also studied.
(4) Development of the simulation technology
A literature survey on KUROSHIO current and a field investigation of current area have been carried out. An in-house computer code for estimating the underwater floating type current turbine has been merged with another in-house code for motion estimation of mooring system. Specifications of model for the tank test have been reviewed. Basing on this specification a scale model has been designed.
(5) Preliminary Research on Methodology for evaluation of Generator and Feasibility
We carried out literature review on KUROSHIO current as one of our target for ocean current generator. We carried out preliminary investigation on limitation of production sizes of blade by oversea blade manufactures which supply for tidal generator.
As far as standardization process, main studies are proceeding mainly for Tidal current generator. Therefor another appropriate standardization method might be required for ocean current generators.
We carried out preliminary calculations for cost of energy depend on size of the rotor power and scale of the farm. The cost exercise has been extended into examining the trends of cost predicted by the industry and some specific costs of energy that could be realized as arrays in the KUROSHIO Current.
(6) Feasibility of the ocean current generator
Principle particulars and technical challenge of elemental components for ocean current generator have been investigated and the key components to be developed have been extracted.
