Due to a background of solving the global water problems, this study of the Mega-ton Water System promoted research, as planned, on a total of eight sub-topics. Five of these were for elemental technologies and three for systems technologies. The aim of this research was to develop systems related technologies that can be implemented in plants, such as mega-scale desalination plants which consider the environment and energy matters that must be implemented in the future. Water problems are a pressing issue for the Earth, so it is important to obtain information on research trends in the world and the latest trends of global societal needs, to confirm the target values and overall direction of research, and to review all this information as necessary. Therefore, this year, in the unified whole research of this study of the Mega-ton Water System, the following work was carried out: a.International conference participation: We participated in a total of eight international conferences, including the Global Water Summit 2011 (Germany), Singapore International Water Week (Singapore), IDA Congress (Australia), as well as others in China (three conferences), Saudi Arabia and France. At these conferences, we strategically exchanged information about the latest research trends at the global level. b.Sub-topic research progress confirmation: In addition to holding sub-topic leader meetings (two times) and SSD rounds (two times), we ascertained the state of progress for each individual topic and the research as a whole from monthly reports on each sub-topic. c.Review and analysis of documents: We purchased documents published at international conferences and in addition the GWI/IDA Desalination Plants Inventory and worked on understanding and analyzing business trends, such as transitions in the equipment of desalination plants and operating costs, as well as changes in the players of the industry. d.Information exchange with international experts (advisors): i) We held a Mega-ton Workshop to which we invited an international expert (Professor Emeritus Takashi Asano), and we shared information and strengthened cooperation between the sub-topics. ii) We held a Mega-ton Workshop to which we invited three international experts (Professor Fane, Professor Drioli and PE. Nikolay), and collected information on the world’s most advanced membrane research and plant design. e.Information transmission: In addition to promoting this research, we fully cooperated with out-research activities and proactively cooperated with media requests for newspapers and magazines, etc. (Outputs of the research and development) Looking back over the past year, the research on each sub-topic can be considered as having progressed more or less as planned. However, as unified whole research, the result of our active participation in international conferences and our strategic intelligence activities is that it has become clear competition from overseas has grown increasingly severe. Therefore, in order to move further reliably forward with our important sub-topics and research contents, we have determined it is necessary to place emphasis on our budget allocation and to modify the contents of our study. We will carefully examine the research contents of ourselves and others and the state of progress of these. We will also place further importance and reallocate our budget. Moreover, in order to clarify our research goals, we specified the relationship of each research topic with research outputs (1: the seawater desalination system at a scale of 1 million m3/day (overseas development-oriented) 2: the wastewater treatment system at a scale of 10,000 m3/day (domestic-development-oriented)) and we made these relationships known to each sub-topic team. Together with this, we actively promoted the compilation and review of our cost structure which is necessary to carry out the overall design of each system.
