1.Description of the Model Project and the Outcome of this year: This model project aims at checking the cost performance of the bioethanol production which uses cassava pulp as a material in a pilot plant. Namely, in Thailand, cassava pulp-producing country, the entrusted companies experimentally prove “techniques for the low-cost production of bioethanol developed in the Japan”. And, the entrusted companies and counter partner of Thailand cooperate in order to disseminate the techniques in Thailand. In Thailand, energy consumed is increasing rapidly following an economic growth, and the Thailand Government authorities have encouraged the dissemination of alternative energy. The betterment in a production capacity of bioethanol, a stable supply, and a reduction of production costs is achieved by the dissemination of these techniques, and the contribution to the reduction of amount of fossil-fuel consumption and the emission of a greenhouse gas in Thailand is expected. Since a lot of starch remains in cassava pulp and it may be supplied at a constant low price, it is promising as a bioethanol material. However, because the pulp contains much cellulose which is hard to saccharify, there is no effective use measure. In this project, entrusted companies establish the bioethanol producing methods with the dry milling technique which is the pretreatment procedure of the high-concentration cassava pulp, and the simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) technique using thermotolerant yeast. Those techniques are developed by the entrusted companies. A pilot plant of this project will be constructed in the native starch manufacturing plant in Sakaeo province of Thailand. EBP Ethanol Co., Ltd. is one of the starch companies, and is the Thailand side participating company of this project. Works of the project in the Heisei 23 fiscal year to the Heisei 26 fiscal year are; (1) A field study and Agreement conclusion; (2) Design of facilities and processes; (3) Manufacturing and exportation of facilities; (4) Installation and trial run; (5) Pilot experiment; (6) Dissemination activities; (7) Design of a commercial model; (8) Microbial strain maintenance management used. Among these, a part of works regarding (1) field study and agreement conclusion and (2) facility and process designs were implemented in the Heisei 23 fiscal year. The implemented contents are written down below. (1) A field study and agreement conclusion; The entrusted companies are negotiating with EBP Ethanol co., Ltd. regarding ID Agreement articles and clauses. The entrusted companies prepared the MOU accompanying materials. (2) Design of facilities and a process; In order to construct a pilot plant, the entrusted companies prepared the time schedule of the whole project first, and prepared the flow sheet of process steps, the time chart, etc. Next, we determined the capacity and the specification of production equipment and utility facilities.
