FY2010 Annual Report
Utilization of bioresources which can serve as alternatives to fossil fuel is essential for reducing global warming and realizing a sustainable society. From this point of view, aggressive introduction of such bioresources is expected. Biodiesel fuels for commercial production will be developed from waste vegetable oil using catalytic cracking.
Research and Development has been carried out on a practical pilot plant with low construction and operating costs as well as potential to be scale up in the future. This R&D is based on lab experiments for the production of hydrocarbon fuels primarily from kerosene and light oil derived from waste vegetable oil. The production of such hydrocarbon fuels utilizes a catalytic cracking process base on solid catalyst research conducted by Kitakyushu University.
At the 4 month of FY2010, fundamental design of miniature plant for the basic experimental operation was fixed. The miniature plant is under construction by engineering company. The miniature plant has a capacity of maximum 600mL/Hr as oil supply (LHSV3.0). Reactor were prepared 2 set, each reactor contains 200mL of catalyst. Reactor size is 1.0 inches inner diameter and 500mm total heights. Reactor heaters were prepared each 1.0kW electric seas heater coiled over outer diameter of the reactor. Supply pumps were prepared maximum 1.5L/Hr for source oil and water and high pressure (20mPa) nitrogen bombe was prepared as an inert carrier gas. Supply vessel volume is 10L, receiver vessel is 20L. In addition, we wrote operating manual (e.g. How to operate valves when heating, cooling, poring source vegetable oil.). We planed out experimental operating schedule to find out important factors of scale-up items.
