New manufacturing methods of graphite has highly crystalized structure optimized for high-pressure and high-speed CVD process. Artificial grapahite has been made from resin, petroleum pitch and coal pitch under very high temperature more than 3000℃ and very long process time conventionally.
In this study, the vapor growth bulk grapahite was obtained under the temperature less than 1500℃ with very short heating process time less than 5 hours. In this material, grapahite structure grows radially from the core and graphite edge of crystalline exposed in all of surface. X-rays diffraction pattern and Raman spectroscopy analysis indicate that the vapor growth bulk grapahite is highly graphtized anistropy in micro structure, but is isotropic in macro structure.
Residuall hydrogen quantity as function of raw materials, heat treated temperature and pressure are significant process parameters to obtain highly graphitized materials. The porosity of materialis controllable by adding the graphite powder for ranging from 30% to 80% depend on application needs.
The diamond coated saw-wire is suitably used to slice the vapor growth bulk grapjhite for thin sheet less than 100 um. The charge and dischrage characteristic of vapor growth bulk graphite as anode using Li-ion battery cell showed very high performance for rate characteristics, because of this materials has many grapahite edge in all of surface. Marketing strategy of this material is a raw material for Ll-ion battery, GDL of PEFC, and other battries. This material was exhibited at the 1st Battery Japan Exhibition in Tokyo on March 3 -5, 2010, and more than 800 potential customers from automotive, battery,chemical,and materials market encountered.
