(1) Trend of R&D program by country: This survey covers the status of PV R&D activities in developed countries including the USA, the European Union (EU), Germany, France, Italy and Switzerland as well as emerging countries such as China, Taiwan, South Korea and India, and summarizes R&D strategies and trends of various PV technologies. (2) Latest R&D, D trends on PV power generation and system technology: Latest trends of R&D on PV power generation technology were surveyed based on the papers reported in the major international PV conferences held recently. Excellent papers were studied and summarized in the following categories: 1) new concepts, novel materials and devices; 2) organic solar cell technologies; 3) crystalline silicon solar cell technologies; 4) thin-film silicon solar cell technologies; 5) CIGS, II-VI thin-film solar cell technologies; 6) III-V and concentrator PV (CPV) technologies; 7) PV modules and system components; and 8) terrestrial PV systems. (3) Trends on PV technology strategy in the PV industry: PV manufacturers and other PV-related companies are also promoting their own R&D activities. Strategies, roadmaps and achievements of R&D activities mainly by major PV manufacturers were surveyed in this chapter. (4) Survey and analysis on technologies and R&D trends in specific areas: Focusing on specific areas in PV, this chapter covers from basic technologies to the latest trends. The following categories were surveyed in this fiscal year: 1) thin-film silicon PV technologies and 2) CIGS PV technologies.
