1.Purpose of the project The purpose of this project is to develop a combined heat and power system of 60kW electric output with hot water which will use chicken pellet as the fuel for the chicken yard by 2015. The key technology of this project is the new type of external combustion engine which does not choose the fuel. 2.The new type of external combustion engine This engine was developed from the Stirling engine, but depends on a quite different principle. It generates the pressure difference between the heater and the cooler by a pure thermo-dynamical process (patent obtained), and so is free from the restriction of the dead space problem. Since the heater of this engine can be big, the heating temperature can be low to take in the heat energy, and can be tough to take the noxious component of combustion gas of which is included in the combustion gas of the biomass, Nitrogen gas can be the working gas.3.Principle of the new type of external combustion engine This engine is, mainly, made of three parts, separated by valves. The heater and the cooler, the power cylinder, and the pressure difference generator(PDG), typically two piston-cylinders. DG exchanges the low density gas within the heater with the high density gas within the cooler and cause the pressure difference between the heater and the cooler. The power cylinder operates by this pressure difference. 4.The development schedule of the new type of external combustion engine. At phase A, already cleared, a model of two piston-cylinders of 12cmφ as PDG, and two power cylinder of 6cmφ, was constructed and succeeded to generate the pressure difference and to operate self-sustaining. Also, technical problems for this engine were made clear. The valves of big diameter required much force to open when the pressure difference became high. Also, the friction between the piston and the cylinder was too big. Phase B is on the move now, from 2011 to 2012. A model of four piston-cylinders of 18cmφ, two for hot gas and two for cool gas as PDG, and two power cylinders of 12cmφ is under construction. The carbon piston-ring which can withstand the high temperature without the lubrication was adopted. The valve of pressure-balance type was newly designed. This model is supposed to 5kW output with the high gas temperature of 250℃. At phase C, the high gas-temperature will be increased up to 400℃ and output will be 20kW using the chicken pellet as the fuel. The maximum temperature is limitted so that this engine can be constructed only with ordinary materials. At the last stage of phase D, 2014, three 20kW engines will be combined to an engine of 60kW output using chicken pellet as the fuel. This will be the market model proposed for the chicken yard.
