Yoshida et al. proposed efficient methane fermentation for sewage sludge using sub-critical water (hereafter called Sub-CW) hydrolysis as pretreatment(Bioresource Technology, 100, pp.2933-2939(2009)). In this study, in order to make the scientific research practicable, we investigated the effect of Sub-CW pretreatment on methane fermentation was carried out using bench scale batch and continuous experimental apparatus and excess sewage sludge discharged from wastewater treatment plant of activated sludge method at Sumoto City in Awaji Island in Japan. Firstly, we treated the sewage sludge using Sub-CW in various reactions temperatures (393K-493K) and reaction time (10 to 60 min) in batch method, and the products were used as feeds of methane fermentation, respectively. It became clear that when the sludge was pretreated by Sub-CW at 413K for 10 min, almost two times larger amount of biogas was produced than control (without Sub-CW pretreatment) in 4 days fermentation. That was the best reaction condition of Sub-CW pretreatment, which is the same as Yoshida et al. reported before (Proc., APPChE2004, 3P-06-048(2004), Proc., ISETS05, PP.727-730 (2005)). Secondly continuous methane fermentation of the excess sludge pretreated by Sub-CW under the above best condition was carried out. At the end of three months fermentation, the amount of biogas production from pretreated sludge showed about 1.5 times larger than that from control (without Sub-CW pretreatment). The stability of biogas production and pH of the tank feeding Sub-CW pretreated sludge is superior to that of the control. The difference between pretreated sludge and the control are widening according to shorten the HRT of fermentation tank.
