An innovative and smart photovoltaic generation system integrated with lithium-ion capacitor storage is newly proposed and the contribution to stable operation of power grids is demonstrated with simulations. Amid mounting international concern over the problem of global warming, the more installation of PV generation is indispensable also in Japan. The problems to be solved related with large penetration of PV generation in distribution network in Japan are said : (1)Voltage rise due to reverse-power from PV generations, (2)Likely excessive supply of electricity in the grid due to full PV generation, (3)Power fluctuations due to rapid changes of solar radiation and (4)Capacity degradation of frequency control especially in grids of small isolated islands. We proposed an innovative and smart photovoltaic generation system integrated with lithium-ion capacitor storage that can be operated to resolve the problems of the above (3) and (4). The lithium-ion capacitor has several advantages over batteries. For example, it has good durability performance in high cycle of charge and discharge, and low self-discharge characteristic. It is safety suitable for residential use and enables easy and accurate detection of the State of Charge(SOC) which is useful for the output control based on the SOC. The proposed smart PV generation system employs the concept of a Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) technology for control the PV output, though the conventional PV output simply follows maximum output of PV Array. In electricity grids, the frequency of generated voltage is stabilized by a combination of the rotational inertia (rotating mass) of synchronous generators in the grid. This is because the rotating masses of all synchronous generators are coupled electromechanically through their grid connections and as a consequence, run at exactly the same electrical frequency. In future, distributed non-synchronous generation units may replace a significant part of the synchronous generation capacity, then, the total rotational inertia of the synchronous generators is decreased significantly. In such case, the smart PV system will act as a synchronous generator in the grid to participate stable frequency control. In addition to the contribution to grid frequency control, the smart PV system has function to smooth the PV array output by control of charge/discharge of lithium-ion capacitor and thus, it results stabilized power output into the grids. The energy storage of capacitor works to filter out the high-frequency fluctuations of PV Array output. The control method of charge/discharge in lithium-ion capacitor based on the concept of a Virtual Synchronous Generator (VSG) technology is proposed. The results of dynamic simulations using mathematical model developed by MATLAB/Simulink are presented in order to show contributions to maintaining stability of grid frequency.
