 In this year, the cooling tests with HTS cables, terminations, a joint and the cooling system were conducted at the Asahi Substation to confirm their performance as design. In parallel, some line switches, circuit breakers and XLPE cables were installed and connected to the HTS cable and the transformer. Finally, it was connected to the grid on October 29th in 2012. The system is operating successfully and some data on operating temperature and pressure are being accumulated corresponding to the fluctuate loading current and ambient temperature

R&D item (1) Study on general reliability of HTS cable system

(1) Development of a total system:
 Regarding to development of the cooling system with large capacity and high efficiency, we started to develop a Briton cycle refrigerator with 5 kW capacity and o.1 in COP. In this fiscal year, a refrigerator system was assembled with turbo compressors, an expansion machine, a cold box and water coolers. As the results of this refrigerator system, it is clearly expected to accomplish the goal of COP 0.1 with 5 kW capacity. In addition, a circulation pump and a reservoir tank were manufactured to prepare for liquid nitrogen circulation system.
 
 Regarding to development of the large capacity cables and compact terminations, for concept designs of 22 kV/12 kA cable and termination for Hydro power plant were finished. A model cable core was manufactured and loaded at 12 kA successfully. A model bushing for termination was manufactured and tested in liquid nitrogen, successfully.

(2) Development of operation technology on electric power transmission:
 Initial cooling method and operating and controlling method of the cooling system were confirmed based on the actual operation. As the results, the operating manuals for the HTS cable and the cooling system were revised and completed.

(3) Demonstration of reliable performance in the real grid
 Cooling tests of HTS cable were conducted with the cooking system to check their performance before connecting to the grid. It was confirmed that the HTS cable has the critical current of 6.4 kA, DC withstanding voltage performance of 151.8kV for 10 minutes and the heat leakage of 2.4 kW at no loading as design.

 It was also confirmed that the cooling system can control the cable inlet temperature at 69±1 K, reservoir tank pressure at more than 0.2 MPaG and liquid nitrogen flow rate at 40 L/min stably for long time. In addition, maintenance method of refrigerators and circulation pumps were confirmed
not to make any interruption or any fluctuation for the system.

 Finally, the HTS cable was connected to the grid on October 29th in 2012. The first in-grid operation with HTS cable in Japan was started and the system is now operating successfully.

R&D item (2) Study on Normalization of operation technology for HTS cable system
 
 Some data in terms of testing results and studies on testing method were reported at the WG on CIGRE B1.
 Study on lower AC loss for actual HTS cable was conducted with Nigata University to have a cable design for realizing the AC loss of 1 W/m/ph at 3kA.
