Panasonic has taken an active part in a NEDO project for the research and development on innovative solar cells. The research theme of our group (leader: Prof. Konagai, Tokyo Institute of Technology) is “Thin Film Full Spectrum Solar Cells with Low Concentration Ratios,” and Panasonic has been in charge of the development of thin films with a quantum nano-dots effect for use in solar cells. Our intermediate target for FY2012 in this project is “Development of solar cells with demonstrating quantum effect of nano-dots and we achieve a power conversion efficiency of 10% with nano-dots solar cells”.

To develop high density nano-dots in thin film, nano-dots were prepared from a commercially available PbS nano-dots solution. Solvent for nano-dots was exchanged from toluene to butylamine and the solution was coated on the substrate by the spin-coat method. Then nano-dots films were rinsed with methanol. The thickness of nano-dots film was about 200nm and high density of nano-dots (>70wt%) was confirmed by using TEM cross-sectional images.

To develop solar cells with demonstrating quantum effect of nano-dots, solar cells were fabricated with nano-dots layer on a-Si layers. EQE results with no bias voltage indicated the quantum size effect of nano-dots clearly.
A power conversion efficiency of 2.02% with Voc of 0.71V, Jsc of 6.3mA/cm2 and F.F. of 0.45 were obtained for this structure.
