1) In order to realize the secure sharing of user personal information, a mechanism of information handling is investigated. In this investigation, a user’s personal information is provided to service providers via the secure information exchange platform known as the Privacy Policy Manger (PPM). The PPM handles user information through the use of a pseudonym which hides user’s identity. In addition, the institutional requirements for the realization of the PPM are also examined. Based on this investigation, a prototype of the PPM was constructed, and functional tests were executed to verify the appropriate behavior of each function.
2) The use case of PPM coupled with a Sensing Platform (SP) in an urban space is investigated from the view point of both users and service providers. In addition, user receptiveness for the use case is also examined. To aide in this examination, a work shop was held with residents from the local community. The concept and problems of the personal information sharing between the local authority and service providers was examined. During the workshop, user requests were collected for the use of user personal information that included user privacy in times of emergency.
3) During the 2012 fiscal year, design and development of Ubiquitous Stereo Vision (USV) camera devices was carried out. These devices can capture dynamic human flow patterns even in open spaces, in outdoor lighting conditions where conventional camera devices cannot sufficiently work to capture human flow detection. A Quad-Cubic Microphone Array (QCM) sound detection system was also developed. This system can detect the source direction of both normal and abnormal sounds in open spaces and distinguish the type of the sound. In addition a SP software system was designed, which communicates with sensing devices such as cameras and microphone devices. The SP system accumulates the sensing data, and enables high-speed retrieval of the sensing data by preparing a data cache in the memory of the sensing platform.
4) Using the Privacy Policy Manger (PPM) platform an agreement for the collection and sharing of personal information between service providers and the user was investigated and ideas to minimize the risk of unauthorized release of personal information were considered. When sharing personal information with the service provider, any method that could enable a link to be inferred from the personal information to the true identity of the user must never be allowed. One way to achieve this is to share only the minimum amount of personal information with the service provider, however for certain transactions, more information is required. In order to safely share more information, the use of a pseudonym was developed, and the mechanisms for using the pseudonym were defined. Additional investigation was carried out in the design of a “Trust Framework” between the service providers and users.
