The objective of this R&D project was to develop an energy conserving high-impact pulverizing mill which replaces the ball medium with a cog-ring medium called tandem-ring. It is used for effective pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass to produce the bio-ethanol. The horizontal, unidirectional shaker was developed and confirmed to reduce the required driving power last year.This year, though the abrasion quantity of the inside of mill pod was problem, it could be reduced below 0.01% by the shape of the ring without a circumferential projection in element examination.As for moisture control of biomass, tandem-ring mill (inner diameter 155mm, 740mm in length, 2pods) that a continuous biomass supply and moisture controller is possible, was produced by the modification of the existing mill. The result of the examination showed that the pulverizing and moisture control by the dry air were possible at the same time. It is estimated that this moisture control method by dry air is possible to reduce dry energy more largely than drying by the heating.Furthermore, a design and production of demonstration tandem-ring mill (inner diameter 687mm, 6m in length, 2pods) by the horizontal unidirectional shaker was performed. And continuous pulverizing examinations were carried out. It was confirmed that the operation energy of demonstration mill was reduced approximately 30% in comparison with the energy of circular shaking in the calculation.In a business plan, it was investigated about the stable supply of the biomass in detail as well as the market of the energy conserving high-impact pulverizing mill. In addition, a scenario for business was drawn on the pulverized wood about not only raw materials for bio-ethanol but also the direct marketing.
