1. Overall system proposal and rotor development
1-1 Overall system proposal
The overall system proposal for the hydraulic tidal current generator was developed. In collaboration with Sasebo Heavy Industries(SSK), the specifications for a 20 kW simple test apparatus was designed and fabricated with the cooperation of Daiichi Denki Co. Ltd.. Bench test will be conducted at the Chiba Experiment Station of Tokyo University. Overseas examples of tidal current generators were investigated and technical investigations including rotor breakdown examples and foundation work were conducted.
1-2 Rotor development
In order to apply high efficiency wind power rotors (Bellshion rotor) to tidal current generation, 1/10 scale rotor models (66 cm diameter) were fabricated. The water current tank with wind duct located at the Tsunami High Tides Experimental Laboratory at the University of Tokyo, Chiba Experiment Station was used to measure parameters including performance (power coefficient) and hydrodynamic drag force in collaboration with SSK.

2. Tidal Current/Bottom Topography Investigation and Simulation
2-1 Tidal Current and Bottom Topography Investigation
Existing information (tidal current velocity, tidal range, bottom topography, etc.) was collected for the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture and used in an example analysis of the design of the hydraulic tidal current generator. Prior to starting, we discussed with organizations including local fishery cooperatives and the hydrographic office.
2-2 Simulation
Algorithms and other aspects of high speed parallel computing code (MPI code) were reviewed in order to develop a high precision tidal current simulation modeling appropriate for the tidal conditions around Japan, which can be useful for design of the rotors.

3. Design and bench testing of hydraulic generating system
3-1 Design of tidal current generator and fabrication of 1/10 scale model
Based on the system concept for the hydraulic tidal current generation system of 2 sets of twin rotors equipped underwater nacelles, a 1/10 scale model unit was fabricated including the underwater nacelle structure, rotation axis water proof structure (ship screw technology used) and supporting monopole.
3-2 Hydraulic generation system bench tests
A 20 kW bench testing apparatus with small hydraulic pumps was built with the cooperation of Tokyo University. The 20 kW hydraulic generation system bench test unit will be installed at the Tokyo University Chiba Experiment Stations after April and tests and data collection for performance evaluation will be conducted in collaboration with the University of Tokyo. The main components of 100kW bench apparatus were prepared, such as 100 kW servo motors and reduction unit.

4. Development of the control logic for the hydraulic generation system
Installation of electrical equipment including the control panel and data acquisition unit for the 20 kW bench apparatus were conducted (Daiichi Denki, Fujisawa Factory).
