In FY2012, Hitachi did detail design and manufacturing and factory test for demonstration system.

The system shall be considered the counter measures for frequency fluctuation mainly originated by wind power down ramp event, and for impacts by large amount of EV charging load will be implemented.
In this system, Hitachi utilizes 4 main functions as follows: (i) EV SOC monitoring and remote charging management: (ii) The Integrated distribution system management (iii) Demand side direct load control: (iv) Information & Communication Technology platform

(1)(2)(3) show the main demonstration themes and the name of the major subsystems Hitachi manufactured and tested.
(4) shows the evaluation themes for this system.

(1) An advanced island smart grid demonstration with EV in Maui
- EV energy control center (EVECC)
- Bulk Battery Systems
(2) Smart Grid Demonstration at substation level in Kihei
- Distribution Management System with EMS plus and Direct Load Control functions.
-μ-DMS (micro Distribution Management system)
(3) Smart Grid Demonstration at low voltage line level.
- Home Gateway with Remote Circuit Breaker for EV Normal Charger or Water Heater.
- Smart PCS (Power conditioning System under development)
- Smart Meter and Advanced Measurement Infrastructure

(4) Preparation work for Overall reports as the result of the demonstration project
- Collaboration work as interoperability test for Smart PCS with DOE project in Wailea.
- Cyber security assessment was done and factory penetration test was executed. Field penetration test is being planned.
- Evaluation for the system in the demonstration project from economic viewpoints
- Simulation and study of the business models which shall be the best solution for Island Smart Grid and Low carbon society.
