Hitachi will have a Lead-Acid Battery site in Los Alamos County, New Mexico. The purpose of building this site is to co-study the Smart/Micro Grid Demonstration among Japanese makers and US founded laboratories. Hitachi manufactures (a) Lead-Acid Battery, (b) PCS (Power Conditioning System) for PV (photovoltaic power generation) and PCS for Lead-Acid Battery, and (c) Transformer. General description of each equipment is, (a) Lead-Acid Battery: Lead-Acid Battery is a LL1500W type battery (1500Ah-2V) contained in special enclosure. Total number of Battery enclosues are four(4), and each enclosure contains 192 battery cells. (b) PCS: one(1) x 500kW for PV; two(2) x 500kW for Lead-Acid Battery. All Hitachi PCS are contained in enclosures. (c) Transformer: Hitachi’s transformer is a low voltage type oil filled Amorphous transformer(three phase 500kVA 460V / 460V 60Hz). New Mexico based engineering company has been joined this project to support PE (Professional Engineering) and other construction related areas for Hitachi and all other Japanese makers. This engineering company has been also support procuring UL Standard equipments such as Air Conditioner, Fan, and Lighting inside the enclosure. Hitachi has gone through four(4) business and engineering meetings; those meeting purposes are “logistics of equipments,” “project schedule,” “engineering design review,” and “equipment test procedure” for this project.

Hitachi is studying the interaction between lead-acid battery volume and PV output fluctuation mitigation effect, using simulation tool of summer season and winter season. Fluctuation mitigation effect caused by Lead-Acid Battery would increase due to the volume of battery. Converge and fluctuation mitigation effect during winter days are greater than those of summer days, because Hitachi considers that the range of PV output fluctuation is greater during summer days than winter days based on our the simulation. In FY2012, real effect of PV output mitigation after installation of battery is planned to be researched.
