As participating NEDO project, Hitachi builds a battery site in Los Alamos County, New Mexico in order to co-study the Smart/Micro Grid Demonstration with US founded laboratories. Hitachi designs (a) Lead-Acid Battery, (b) PCS (Power Conditioning System) for PV (photovoltaic power generation) and PCS for Lead-Acid Battery and (c) Transformer. General description of each equipment is, (a) Lead-Acid Battery: Lead-Acid Battery is a LL1500W type battery (1500Ah-2V) and its enclosure. One enclosure containes 192 battery cells, and it comes in four(4) enclosures in total. Enclosure is basically a shipping container. (b) PCS: PCS comes in one(1) x 500kW PV; two(2) x 500kW lead-acid battery PCS. Each PCS is contained in enclosure is basically a shipping container just like battery container. (c) Transformer: Hitachi’s transformer is a low voltage type oil filled Amorphous transformer(three phase 500kVA 460V / 460V 60Hz). All above equipments are manufactured in FY2011. New Mexico based engineering company has been joined this project to support PE (Professional Engineering) and other construction related areas for Hitachi and all other Japanese Makers. This engineering company has been also support procuring UL Standard equipments such as Air Conditioner, Fan, and Lighting inside the enclosures. Hitachi made one-line diagram, scope-of-work sheet, and equipment spec sheet to accelerate the communication. Hitachi has gone through five(5) business meetings in New Mexico, and one(1) with telephone conference with Los Alamos County and engineering company. Hitachi is confident to say that we have been started building credibility with them.

Hitachi examined lead-acid battery volume and collective research item. (1)Effect of lead-acid battery for 1MW photovoltaic power generation fluctuation absorption. In FY2011, real effect of photovoltaic power generation fluctuation absorption after install of battery will be examined. (2)We will examine about voltage fluctuation control function and harmonic restraint function of PCS in FY2011. (3)We have made islanding operation transfer manual and time chart for 3 operation patterns. Operation patterns are as follows. (i)NaS soft start (ii)NaS AVR mode start (iii)lead-acid AVR mode start.
