The contents and outputs of the research and development (Contents of the research and development) Due to a background of solving the global water problems, this research of the Mega-ton Water System started and promoted research, as planned, on a total of eight sub-topics. Five of these were for elemental technologies and three for systems technologies. The aim of this research was to develop the systems related technologies that can be implemented in plants, such as those for mega-scale desalination plant which consider the environment and energy matters that must be implemented in the near future. Water problems are a pressing issue for the Earth so it is important to obtain the information on the research trends in the world and the latest trends of global societal needs, to confirm the target values and overall direction of research and to review all this information as necessary. Therefore, this year in the unified whole research of this study of the Mega-ton Water System the following work was carried out: a. We participated in a total of 11 international conferences, including the Global Water Summit 2010 (France), Singapore International Water Week, IWA World Water Congress (Canada) and others in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Italy, U.S.A, Bahrain, China, Israel and we exchanged the information on research trends. Furthermore, with regards to important meetings that the core researchers were not able to directly participate in, the cooperation was obtained from the relevant sub-topic leaders and as strategic action we worked hard to obtain the latest information. b. In addition to holding a total of 3 sub-topic leader meetings (including the kick off meeting), the state of progress was ascertained for each individual topic and the research as a whole from monthly reports on each sub-topic and direct visits by core researchers to every research location of each sub-topic. c. Review and analysis of documents: Documents published at international conferences and in addition the GWI/IDA Desalination Plants Inventory were purchased and work was made on understanding and analyzing business trends, such as transitions in the equipment of desalination plants and operating costs, and changes in the players in the industry. d. Information exchange with international experts (advisors): Cooperation has been obtained with relevant industry groups, a mini-symposium was held with three international experts and advice was received on the latest state of affairs in the world from the point of view industry experts. e. Information transmission: In addition to promoting this research, with the aim of meeting the expectations of society and the nation we gave full cooperation to newspapers and magazines and cooperated with out-research activities for citizens.(Output of research and development) Looking back over the past year the research of each subtopic can be considered as having progressed more or less as planned. However, as unified whole research, the result of our strategic intelligence activities and active participation in international conferences is that it is clear that competition from overseas has grown increasingly severe. Therefore, the target of research and development must be to further improve upon our initial plans and to press forward with information sharing and to come to a mutual understanding with each sub-topic leader. In the next fiscal year we will work to embody the target values and product image. An item of concern is delays in research caused by the impact of the Tohoku-Kanto Large Earthquake. Damage to equipment is being assessed and a shift of key personnel to help in the recovery process is taking place and we are working hard to minimize the impact of the disaster.
