FY2012 Annual Report

The Kanagawa Academy of Science & Technology (KAST) has collaborated with Prof. Hiroshi Segawa of the Univ. of Tokyo, one of a central researchers of the FIRST program, to establish new and reliable worldwide evaluation methods and standards for the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSC) and organic thin film photovoltaics (OPV) as well as to develop highly efficient DSCs during the period of 2009~2013. For the fiscal year of 2012, KAST has directed its efforts exclusively to the evaluation and standardization of the performance and reliability of such organic photovoltaics. Improved IPCE and I-V analyses of various kinds of organic PVs, generously donated by PV cell and module manufacturers, have gradually yielded more reliable data. The procedures put forth in the “Evaluation method of performance for dye-sensitized solar devices PV01-2009” by the Optoelectronics Industry and Technology Development Association (OITDA) in 2009 were employed for DSC performance measurements. By screening the various kinds of donated sample cells and monitoring all feedback from performance analyses with the cell suppliers for the FIRST group, KAST has proposed a draft entitled, “Evaluation Methods for the Performance of Dye-sensitized Solar Cells (DSCs): Recommended Requirements” at the end of this fiscal year, March 2013.
KAST has presented the above proposals for the standardization of DSC performance measurements at the International Conference for the Evaluation & Standardization of Organic Solar Cells (ICES2013) at Yamagata, Japan (Jan. 25-28, 2013). Scientists from universities and research & evaluation organizations around the world participated in active discussions during this international conference and our proposals were positively received.
