(1) Purpose and Summary
To maintain and expand the superiority of Japan’s battery industry, it is imperative to develop secondary batteries with high performance and low price ahead of the other countries, and to introduce them to the market on an ongoing basis. The goal is to establish the material evaluation technologies in accordance with the development of advanced lithium ion batteries and innovative batteries, which work as the common indexes. Thus, early commercialization of batteries with high-performance and low-price will be achieved with accelerating a more efficient development of domestic battery makers and rapid material proposals from domestic battery material manufacturers.
(2) Achievement of FY2013
a) Four types of advanced lithium-ion battery with following materials were selected,
and the research and development system was fixed in the four projects below.
1) High potential positive electrode (LNMO system)
2) High capacity positive electrode (213 system)
3) High capacity negative electrode (Si -based)
4) Flame-retardant electrolyte (with development of flame-retardant battery)
The research and development of each project is planned to be promoted in secure confidentiality because researches in each project handle the battery materials and batteries in the research stage.
b) The sulfide-based all-solid-state battery, expected to exceed the limit value of energy density of lithium-ion battery (250Wh/kg), is set in the target as the innovative battery and the evaluation technology will be developed for practical use. The goal is to establish the evaluation technology of battery with development of the sheet technology of electrolyte and electrodes, and laminating them. Sulfide-based solid-state batteries have not been commercialized yet. So it is difficult to get the material and leading technology from the existing consortium members. Therefore, seeking the guidance of universities and companies which have advanced sulfide-based solid electrolyte technologies was decided. In FY2013, the environment arrangement for research and development has been carried out. Ar glove boxes, pressing equipment, etc. were installed.
