1. We have started to develop a new supporting system for medical examination and treatment. The system will make it possible to help doctors to manage medical process and outcomes of their patients effectively. As the first step of the development, we are now clarifying detail medical process of head-and-neck cancer care and medical information treated in the process. Also conceptual design of the system is performed to manage individual medical process and their outcomes. In addition, our supporting system will integrate medical image processing process which plays important roles in radiation therapy for cancer. Basic architecture design of the image processing platform is performed to support clinical judgment based on those images.
2.As a first mile stone which is preparation for the development of navigation system for radiotherapy, we have investigated, with radiation oncologists of Hokkaido University hospital, the process flow which is from the diagnosis of cancer to the start of radiotherapy. We focused on the sequential process and treatment options for patients with head neck cancer and extracted the contents of the work-flow of radiation oncologists. After these investigations, we have created the process maps and the table of conditions for the navigation system. A standard course, an advanced technology course, a convenient course, or a cost-effective course can be generated as the options for patients.
3.A pathological IT system is being developed for optimizing pathological diagnosis by storing and utilizing pathology morphological data effectively. Research and development done in fiscal year 2012 was, to investigate specifications of current systems composing process of pathological diagnosis, and to extract development issues for IT connectivity. Also, done was to analyze and extract necessary elements for database framework by classifying these subjects into the following 4 fields such as pathological terms, preparation & general/specific staining, IHC staining, and imaging system. As an IT collaboration instance with other diagnosis, proceeded was a study of correspondence of lesion location between radiological and pathological images in prostate cancer.
4. Radiotherapy collaborative platform system has three roles for this project - (1) Feedback treatment results/data to Cancer medical examination supporting system for total medical process improvement, (2) Create innovate radiotherapy by using pathologic data, and (3) Direct patient to suitable hospital for treatment, by remotely connected treatment planning system. After discussion with group 3, prostate cancer is selected as the first considerable cancer case for innovative radiotherapy, and we start to develop new radiotherapy technique with the pathologic data used. And securities required for data transfer to/from systems including remote-treatment planning are checked with existing guidelines published by, such as, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare etc.
