We mainly investigated the modified surface for steel to inhibit the calcium carbonate scaling, and evaluated the influence of calcium carbonate scale on the heat transfer.

1. Investigation to location of the calcium carbonate scale formation and its condition
The scaling location at Obama hot spring in Obama-cho, Unzen-shi, Nagasaki were searched. The chemical compositions of their scales were analyzed. The examination locations are three hot-water cylinders near the binary cycle power plant. Hot spring water is supplied from each source into the cylinder. We found the one location where the calcium carbonate scale formed. Therefore the site of the filed test was decided. Furthermore, we investigated the interval time to remove the scale from the duct of the hot spring water at Obama hot spring.

2. Modeling for mechanism of calcium carbonate scale formation
Samples were soaked into hot spring water at two hot-water cylinders, and the chemical compositions of the formed scales were analyzed. The weight of the formed scale on three kinds of metal was evaluated by the immersion test for two weeks. The weight difference among the materials was clearly observed. Their results were similar to those of previous reports.

3. Influence of scale on heat-transfer property
Calcium carbonate scale largely influenced on the heat-transfer property. We simulated the influence of the scale on heat-transfer property, and composed the testing machine to evaluate it.

4. Scale formation acceleration test
Calcium carbonate scale was formed by the scale formation acceleration test. The scale formation resistant properties of materials were analyzed.
