Summary of the progresses

We worked on the search for an alternative permanent magnets of the axial flow pump, after discontinuation of the magnets from the supplier. We selected a set of substitute magnets that are theoretically equivalent to the former magnets. The first prototype containing the substitute magnets demonstrated to provide sufficient performance as designed. The prototype also contained a novel right-angle inlet port to miniaturize the whole dimension of the device. This right-angle port was expected to lower the pressure head due to its flow path, and its effect on the shear stresses and therefore on mechanical blood destruction should be investigated.
We carried out hemolysis testing in which the amount of broken red blood cells were measured to evaluate its safety in terms of blood losses with the device.
The hemolysis testing was carried out according to the international standard protocol using fresh calf blood in the laboratory of our facility. The measured amount of hemolysis caused by the prototype was within the normal range for clinical applications.
