Looking toward the development of next-generation IGCC in which the gas turbine inlet temperature is higher than 1,500 degrees C, the project aims at developing CO2 capture with low energy consumption.
Using the existing EAGLE gasifier (a one-chamber, two-stage, swirling oxygen-blown, entrained-bed coal gasifier), this project is conducting research on the operation of newly designed and constructed CO2 separation and capture facilities employing physical absorption (syngas capacity: 1,000 m3N/h).
In fiscal 2013, a variety of parameter tests followed on from fiscal 2012, and parameter optimization tests and other tests were conducted. In the area of new CO2 capture technologies, chemical absorption using a flash drum (heated flash regeneration) has been field-tested using syngas in order to determine optimum operating conditions. The selection of areas to be surveyed and the methods to be used were considered in a material degradation survey of the facilities. Samples were taken from the selected areas from January 2014, and some of these have been subjected to a material degradation survey. The results in this fiscal year are described below.

(1) Physical CO2 capture facilities
In fiscal 2013, tests setting the H2S flash drum pressure and CO2 flash drum pressure as parameters were conducted as part of various parameter tests related to the reduction of energy loss, and parameter optimization tests were conducted based on the results of parameter tests conducted in fiscal 2012 and fiscal 2013. In addition, a variety of characteristic tests were conducted in medium- and low-pressure modes, and tests to determine the limits of the sour shift catalyst, newly added during this fiscal year, were also conducted. The test operation planned for this project was completed at the end of November 2013, and the results were compiled.

(2) Field tests of new CO2 separation and capture technology
Field tests of chemical absorption (heated flash regeneration), which has been tested as a promising technology using syngas in the EAGLE facility since last fiscal year, were continued. Parameter tests were conducted on the solvent flow rate, as well as on the temperature to reduce the absorbent regeneration energy. The results of these tests demonstrated operating conditions are potentially capable of further reducing regeneration energy consumption rate, at a CO2 recovery rate of approximately 85%, against actual figures obtained during the Development of Multiple-Purpose Coal Gasification Technology and Research on Zero-Emission Technology Project.
