Wind power is considered as the most cost-competitive sustainable energy source and its use is expected to grow significantly in the future. The Department of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) foresees the overall installed base of wind power capacity in Japan growing from 3,000,000kW in 2010 to 20,000,000kW by 2030.
Towers of wind turbine structures are generally built of steel and have to be renewed along with generators every twenty years because of metal fatigue. Herein, the authors propose a new durable wind turbine tower with a precast shell structure. Spirally oriented prestressing tendons provide simultaneous compression in the vertical direction and along the circumference (in-plane direction) of the structure. The tendons unite the precast concrete shell parts, resist the vertical flexure of the tower and improve the in-plane compressive strength of the precast concrete shells. The proposed prestressted concrete tower can be used for more than one hundred years and consequently contributes for controlling the greenhouse effect.
The authors investigated successfully the following subjects for the implementation of the proposed tower.
(6) Development of techniques for the reduction in mixing hours of ultra-high strength steel fiber concrete with 150N/mm2 compressive strength.
(7) Development of techniques for taking the measure of the precast concrete shell parts
(8) Development of techniques for arranging spirally oriented prestressing tendons to unite the precast concrete shell parts
(9) Execution of works for prestressed concrete tower with spiral tendons 8 meters high.
(10) Information retrieval for offshore wind turbine strictures in countries of the world.
