Abstract of research and development for fiscal year 2013:

The main interim target for fiscal year 2013 is to design an efficient solar tracking system with a trough collector mirror for a solar cell with multi-junctions. Another target is to develop a solar tracking system that features 2-axis control and light concentration with a magnification ratio of more than ten times. For this purpose, we designed a light-collecting optical system that is capable of partially collecting scattered sunlight and developed a solar tracking system based on its design.

(1) The scattered sunlight has an incident angle in the range of 0 to more than 120 degrees to the direction of the sun. However, it is strongly biased in the range of 0 to 20 degrees. Therefore, we designed a light-collecting optical system that is capable of collecting such scattered sunlight (from 0 to 20 degrees) using a trough collector mirror.
(2) The light-collecting optical system has a light-concentration capability with a magnification ratio of ten times. In order to track the sun with this system, we developed a solar tracking system with 2-axis, diurnal motion, sun culmination altitude control.
(3) Outdoor experiments conducted at Kisarazu National College of Technology revealed that the solar tracking system is able to track the sun correctly, and the light-collecting optical system that we designed effectively collects scattered sunlight.
