High Performance PV Generation System for the Future. R and D on Ultimate Wafer-based Si Solar Cells. (Construction of industrial development platform, pilot line of crystalline silicon solar cell) Objective:The objective of this theme is to collaborate among all participant companies and institutes closely and accelerate and elevate the research and development by consortium framework centered on Toyota Technology Institute (TTI). TTI has been undertaking a role to construct the pilot line of crystalline silicon solar cell as a part of the industrial development platform.Results:1. Construction of pilot line of crystalline silicon solar cell TTI has been constructing the pilot line of crystalline silicon solar cell and improving it continuously. We have already established the environment to fabricate the conventional crystalline silicon solar cell and developed elemental technologies to realize new high efficiency solar cell, so-called PERL (Passivated Emitter and Rear Localized BSF) cell by the end of previous financial year. In this year, we were maintaining and improving the pilot line to evaluate new materials and new processes. Additionally, we tried to integrate the elemental technologies and fabricate PREL cell. The main results of the development of are as follows;1. 1. Operational status of pilot line of crystalline silicon solar cell The average operation rate of pilot line of TTI is 57%. Especially, the operation rate after September was nearly 60 ~ 80% and the maximum was 85%. This shows the TTI pilot line is fully utilized for R&D of Japanese companies in PV industry.1.2. Establishment of high efficiency solar cell fabrication process We have been developing new high efficiency PERL solar cell suitable for mass-production, and have achieved 20% cell efficiency (Jsc38.5mA/cm2, Voc656mV, F.F.0.792). Additionally, to evaluate the feasibility of the PERL cell process, we estimated the module production cost and the result was 56.9 JPY /W. 2. Evaluation of hetero-junction technology TTI has been investigating hetero-junction technology to clarify the band structure of hetero-junction and establish the band engineering technology. The main achievements of this development in this year are as follows; 2.1. Establishment of devise simulation environment We introduced 2-dimensional device simulation software named “ATLAS” and have constructed the device simulation environment that we were able to simulate hetero-junction solar cell accurately using our original quantum model.2.2. RPD (Reactive Plasma Deposition) equipment for hetero-junction solar cell We have introduced and launched the RPD equipment that we were able to deposit TCO (Transparent Conductive Oxide) with low damage and change material composition easily to investigate the electrode of hetero-junction solar cell.
